Frost casts
Frostbolt for most of a fight and spends its procs as they come. A Frostbolt's chill can grant
Fingers of Frost, which treats the boss as frozen for your next two spells: you spend both on
Ice Lance, which then deals four times its damage with
Shatter's extra crit. A landed Frostbolt can also make your next
Arcane Missiles free and twice as fast through
Missile Barrage. On a one-minute single-boss fight the build in this guide does 701.7 DPS, 20th of 25 damage specs.
Strengths and weaknesses
Strengths
- The same number at any fight length. Frost has no damage cooldown to line up, so one boss for one minute and for three come out almost level: 701.7 DPS against 703.3 DPS.
- No mana to manage on one boss. Over three minutes your mana pool, regeneration and gems pay for every Frostbolt, so a
Major Mana Potion adds nothing there (0.1 DPS). - Packs of bosses.
Cone of Cold and
Arcane Explosion hit all three bosses, and Cone of Cold's chill rolls Fingers of Frost on each of them. On a one-minute fight against three bosses Frost does 950.2 DPS and ranks 14th.
Weaknesses
- A low ceiling. Frost reaches 64.3 % of the best damage spec's number on a one-minute single-boss fight.
- Nothing to press for burst. Forever has no Water Elemental, and Frost's deep talents (
Cold Snap,
Ice Barrier,
Ice Block) add no damage. Burstier specs pull ahead on short fights, so Frost drops to 20th on a one-minute single-boss fight. - Short of hit. On Classic's spell table, which our simulator uses until Forever's is known, a level-63 boss resists 17 % of your spells and only 16 % hit removes that. The set has 4.9 % from gear and 5 % from
Elemental Precision, so 1 % hit is worth 17.3 spell damage.
On every fight
Frost's damage barely changes with fight length, while the top of the table gains on short fights, so Frost's rank falls from 16th on three minutes to 20th on one. On three bosses it moves up, because most of its damage there comes from spells that hit every boss. Pick a fight in the table to read the guide for it.
Races
For the Horde, Undead leads every fight except one boss for one minute. A caster's
Touch of the Grave has a 10 % chance on each spell hit, once a second, to drain 5 % of your maximum health from the boss. Arcane Explosion's three hits a cast fire it far more often: it is 3.5 % of an Undead mage's damage there, against 1.6 % on one boss. Troll's
Berserking at the pull puts it first on a one-minute single-boss fight, and the race table shows the margin.
For the Alliance, Human leads every fight. Sword Specialization now gives 2 % crit with all spells while you hold a sword, and the set's main hand,
Sageblade, is one. The extra 5 % Spirit adds nothing on one boss.
What a Mage brings to the raid
Arcane Brilliance gives the whole raid 31 Intellect. The table lists the specs it helps on this fight and by how much.
Winter's Chill no longer counts here: in Forever it raises only your own Frostbolt and Ice Lance crit, not the raid's.
Arcane Brilliance+1.1 % to 15 of 25most: Stormcaller Shaman +2.9 %
